January 2008

Change
With time comes change, and change can be for the best as it is in our case. We are proud to announce our newest board memebers: Guy Granka (Friends of Kerncliff), Jenn Reader (Consulting Ecologist), and our two long-time volunteers and hands-on supporters; Jonathan Manzine and Fern Heywood. Welcome and we look forward to your contributions for 2008. We also have some contact changes as well, a new phone number as well as fax line. Sorry for any inconvenience: Phone 905.407.FSRT (3778), Fax 905.631.1128.

2007 also brought us some new support from the business sector. Good Cars Only (www.goodcarsonly.ca) located in Burlington has donated us a much needed work truck. It is a 1990 GMC 2500 red pick up truck with cap. You will see it during our many projects and we can't thank Good Cars Only enough for this generous donation. Nelson Aggregate Co. has also donated a large sum of money for our ongoing urban creek restoration programs. We thank these organizations and hope to create relationships and bonds with other local businesses so that we may help keep our region's greenspaces full of life and areas which we can enjoy for future generations. We invite others to join our campaign.

Membership Renewal
As important as our business support we would be lost without our members. Our members have been deemed the title of "mudpuppy." So when you hear us speak of Mudpuppies, you can assume we are speaking of our supporting members unless otherwise stated. For only $20/year you join the team and become a Mudpuppy. The membership fee feeds our organization and allows us to continue. Members are encouraged to visit our website often to view our latest events, projects and changes to the organization. We hold an annual meeting in Burlington once a year that we also encourage our Mudpuppies to attend as well as an Appreciation Day filled with fun, food and friends held at one of our close and beautiful conservation areas. This gives us a chance to meet with our members and hear their comments first hand. Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you all again real soon. Dates for the annual meeting and Appreciation Day will be decided on shortly.

Fifth Annual Duck Race was a Great Success

The Fifth Annual Duck Race was held on May 26, 2007 at the beautiful Hidden Valley Park in Aldershot. It was a wonderful day for a festival and the sun was shining. Thousands of people of all ages came out to enjoy the fabulous sites and sounds of the Aldershot Community Festival, and were all anticipating the duck race. There were 774 tickets sold and we were able to profit just over $3000 for the event. We hope to double if not tripple these sales for 2008.

At ~2:00 pm, the ducks were dropped into the Grindstone Creek, and they were off! The ducks twisted and turned through over 500 meters of stream, while the surrounding ticket holders screamed and cheered there ducks to victory. The duck race has raised money for Field and Stream Rescue Team to continue its responsibility in keeping our community natural and healthy. All of this was made possible by many people and organizations in our community joining together to help.We would like to give thanks to the presenting sponsor, BioTLC and to Aldershot Community Festival for holding this annual event, as well as the City of Burlington, R&M Construction, www.smartflyer.ca, Preston Insurance and Home Alone Petsitter. We would also like to thank Tim Horton's for donating food and beverages to our volunteers on the day of.

We are pleased to annouce that our first prize winner was David Whale ($1000), second prize was awarded to Brian Selfe ($500), third prize was won by Mike Monaghan ($250) and our last prize of $100 was given to Palma McMartin. Congradulations to you all, and that you for all whom entered; hope to see you in May!

If you or someone that you know would be interested in having their company support this event please contact us at 905.407.3778. The reason we are on our Fifth Race this year is because of your generosity.

The event was also a success due to our many volunteers. We can't thank you enough and we hope that you will be able to help in this years event as well. Please contact us as soon as possible if you would like to help. We need help not only on the day of the event but on our committee leading up to race day. For high school students and diversion situations, this is a great opportunity to get your community hours completed. If interested in selling duck tickets at school, work or in general please contact us immediately. Thank you all once again for your help and support.

This years event will be held on May 31, 2008 at the same location. Specifics will be mentioned shortly as well as tickets for sale. This is an important year for Aldershot since they are celebrating their 50 years being a part of the City of Burlington. As part of this celebration you can expect a much larger and longer Aldershot Community Festival. Please keep updated with the festival itself at www.aldershotfestival.com.

Attention Students!
Are you looking for a fun way to complete your community service hours needed for graduation?

All of Field and Stream Rescue Team’s projects provide opportunities for you to volunteer and get the hours you need. We have a wide variety of activities that need your help! Administrative tasks, fundraising activities, helping with field work, or suggest an idea of your own. What a great way to add to your resume!

If you can think of a way you would like to help us out, let us know. This is your chance to meet and work with others in your community who share similar interests and care about the environment, and to help keep your community beautiful for years to come.
