2023 Completed Projects
Howard Road Slope Stabilization Part 1| Saturday November 11th | 12pm - 4pm
Working alongside the City of Burlington to install bank stabilization measures along the banks where overland flow is eroding the land as water is flowing towards Grindstone Creek. The team will be installing live fascines to form a small berm to help stabilize the slope. Live fascines are long, cylindrical bundles of woody plant material (usually comprised of native dogwood or willow species) tied together using natural string or twine, and are approximately 3 to 5 feet long and between 4 to 9 inches in diameter. This project includes digging shallow trenches, installing fascines, installing coir logs, planting trees and shrubs, and placing a protective barrier around the area to prevent the deer that visit the site from browsing on the plant material. Please come prepared with clothes and boots or shoes you don't mind getting dirty. Please come prepared for cooler temperatures by wearing multiple layers of clothing, hat, and warm socks. Please be prepared for fairly steep working conditions and working along a slope.

Site-Prep Part 1 for Sherwood Forest Park Planting | Thursday September 28th | 4:30pm to 7:30pm
Come help the FSRT prepare the soil at the Sherwood Forest Park planting site located along Sheldon Creek. Within the designated planting area displayed by the green shape on the map, the soil had become heavily compacted from high pedestrian traffic. This makes it very difficult to dig holes for planting and negatively impacts soil health. The site preparation activities include hand tilling with rakes and other tilling tools, followed by the application of an even layer of mulch . Water will then be applied to the site once all the mulch has been applied to the site using buckets and rakes. Finally we will be installing some basic signage to help notify pedestrians of the work being completed.
Please note that there are patches of both Poison Ivy and Poison Oak on the site and caution must be taken. We recommend that you wear long-sleeved shirt, long pants tucked into boots, and wear non-permeable gloves. Both rubber gloves and work gloves will be offered at this event. It is recommended that you wear bug spray, long-sleeved shirts, long pants tucked into tall socks, and rubber boots or boots/shoes you don't mind getting wet or muddy. Additionally, the site is within a floodplain with some wet areas and some volunteers will need to cross the creek for this event. Rubber boots are highly recommended. Joe Sam's Park Ecosystem Restoration Project | August 26th
REGISTRATION REQUIRED
In partnership with Conservation Halton, the FSRT will be helping to rehabilitate Grindstone Creek. The project will take place at Joe Sam's Park where Conservation Halton and the City of Hamilton have been restoring the property where the land was once used as agricultural lands for cattle production. Cattle production results in various impacts on creek habitats, specifically through the destruction of the banks of the watercourse, often resulting in "online ponds". Online ponds are defined as a pool of water connected to a watercourse. Online ponds negatively impact the health of the cold water course, including Grindstone Creek, by contributing warm water into the watercourse that can have negative impacts on fish populations that depend on cold water courses ecosystems.
Join us to help make a positive impact on local ecosystems! Some of the tasks will include barrier removal, removing woody material from impacting the flow of the creek, and installing bioengineering techniques to reduce the impact of a few ponds that are negatively impacting health of the watershed. This project requires volunteers to have chest waders. If you would like to attend but do not have chest waders, please reach out to us at [email protected] and we would be happy do our best to help find a pair to use on the day of the event!
This event is first come, first serve! Please send an email to [email protected] identifying the preferred date you would like to attend and attach a signed copy of the "Grindstone Creek Volunteer Form" that is available below.
Available Spots:
August 26th from 9:00am to 12:00pm (Rescheduled from July 8th) COMPLETED!
August 2nd from 12:00pm to 4:00pm (Rescheduled from July 13th) COMPLETED!

click below to see outcome: www.streamrescue.com/sheldoncreek2022
Some heavy lifting and rough terrain. This event will take place throughout the riparian zone of Sheldon Creek, located near Corpus Christi Catholic School. There is a significant amount of waste in the creek and on the floodplains. Volunteers will need work gloves and closed toed shoes. This event also provides an excellent opportunity for local high school students to learn about and participate in environmental stewardship and accumulate their volunteering hours. The meeting location is the West parking lot of Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School.
NOTE: Due to the event taking place later in the season than expected, there will be no removal of larger debris or other waste from within the creek channel. This is due to restriction windows on "Projects Near Water" for the protection of fish and fish habitat during critical life history stages including spawning and migration.
